The Rotary Express Train is a g-24 scale replica model of an authentic CP Huntington. The original CP Huntington was the first locomotive purchased by the Southern Pacific Railroad, carrying that railroad's number 1 engine. Huntington used the locomotive beginning on April 15, 1864, during construction of the western portion of the First Transcontinental Railroad in North America.
The CP Huntington replica at Village Park is number 262 of the 320 that have been hand crafted. This train has a history of serving families in the New Orleans, Louisiana area and was moved here just two weeks before Hurricane Katrina.
The Kannapolis Rotary Club donated funds for Rotary Station. Mr. J. Carlyle Rutledge, a longtime member of the Kannapolis Rotary Club, also generously supported the project and requested that the train go by the name Rotary Express. A coach is named in honor of Martin Marietta for their generous donation of stone that was used in the installation of the track.
Rides on the Rotary Express cost $1.00 and can be purchased at the Village Park concessions stand (cash, check, debit, or credit card). Punch cards may also be purchased in person or over the telephone from the Parks and Recreation Administrative Office at 700 West C Street (cash, check, debit, or credit card).
The Rotary Express hours of operation vary by season. The Rotary Express operates seven days a week during the Summer. This will be on a schedule of 10:00AM to 7:00PM Monday-Saturday and noon to 6:00PM on Sundays. Spring and fall hours are weekends only.
